How it all started...
CrossPoint Baptist Church of Worland, Wyoming was established on February 7, 2020 as a result of the joining together of First Southern Baptist Church of Worland and Worland First Baptist Church.
First Baptist Church officially began as a part of the American Baptist Church denomination on July 26, 1906 with 12 members meeting in a tent. By the end of the year they had built a church building at 7th & Culbertson in Worland, WY and had 24 members. When the church had outgrown their building, three lots were purchased at 11th and Big Horn with the groundbreaking taking place on February 21, 1948. The first service was held January 1, 1951.
The First Southern Baptist Church of Worland, Wyoming was organized December 13, 1953, with 13 members. The first meeting place was in the basement of the residence at 715 Howell Ave. Eighteen members were added to the church by May of 1954. By October 1955, 54 new members had joined the church. Two building lots were purchased in October 1955 on the corner of 15th and Washakie. With the men and women of the church working together, they were able to move into the church building in January 1956.
Because of changes to the direction of the American Baptist Church in 1999, the pastor and members of First Baptist Church felt they could no longer associate in good faith with that denomination. After much prayer and research, they voted in February 2003 to approach the Southern Baptist Convention in order to become a member church with them. This move was finalized on September 8, 2003 by a vote of the Big Horn Association to accept First Baptist Church into the Southern Baptist Convention.
Fast forward 15+ years, the first major project First Southern Baptist and First Baptist worked on together was a joint Easter Service in 2019. The service was held in the Worland Middle School Auditorium. During the week prior to the Easter service a team of high school students came from Bakersfield, CA to canvas the town, inviting people to the nightly carnivals held throughout the city as well as to the Sunday Easter service.
At this time First Baptist Church was beginning the search for a new pastor and the idea was broached that it might be a good thing for the two churches to join together. After much prayer and consideration it was decided to pursue the possibility. Although the two churches were both members of the Southern Baptist Convention, they both had differing ways of church governance so it was decided that in order to establish a common ground the first step would be to prepare a new church constitution and bylaws by which the new church would operate.
After the new documents were drafted, the two church bodies voted to join together in December of 2019 and to have a fresh start the name of the church was set as CrossPoint Baptist Church. The official start date of the new church was February 2, 2020 and are Helping People Find and Follow Jesus.
